San Pellegrino Terme – Reducing the carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions compared to the most modern cargo vehicles. The Sanpellegrino Group reinforces its commitment to environmental sustainability from 2019, using a new fleet made up entirely of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) powered vehicles to shuttle S. Pellegrino mineral water from the Ruspino plant to the Madone hub from which the water is distributed to more than 150 countries.
Sustainable logistics
The keys of the LNG fleet were symbolically delivered to Maura Sartore, Head of Supply Chain South Europe Nestlé Waters, and Duccio Sbriglione, Director of the Sanpellegrino Ruspino plant, by Andrea Toccafondi, CEO of Koinè, in the presence of Giuliano Ghisalberi, Mayor of Zogno, Vittorio Milesi, Mayor of San Pellegrino Terme, Franco Fenoglio, Italscania CEO and Managing Director, Licia Balboni, CEO of Federmetano and Andrea Fossa, Scientific Director of “Gino Marchet” Contract Logistics Observatory of Milan Polytechnic, Claudia Terzi, Transport Councillor of the Lombardy Region, protagonists in Zogno of a sustainable logistics round table.
Innovative project
Thanks to LNG, an innovative fuel characterised by a reduction of carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxide emissions, Sanpellegrino has a fleet of environmentally friendly trucks that entirely replaces the vehicles used until now to shuttle S. Pellegrino water. The project, achieved with the logistical support of the Koiné Group and the technology of Scania vehicles, allows the brand to reach a new and important milestone under the sign of sustainability, which has always been one of the cornerstones of the Group.
Promoting the water and its territory
“The LNG project, developed in collaboration with our logistical partner, Koinè, is an important element that falls within the activities developed by the Sanpellegrino Group to promote the mineral water and the territory from which it springs, with continuous investments in the field of innovation and sustainable development policies aimed at favouring the reduction of environmental impact. - said Maura Sartore, Head of the Sanpellegrino Group Supply Chain - We are, therefore, proud to use a fleet of vehicles powered by an innovative fuel to shuttle S. Pellegrino water, a choice that will allow us to make our business increasingly more sustainable, saving the emission of more than 500 tonnes of carbon dioxide over the course of the coming year.”
The partners of the initiative
“Koinè has always been committed to a continuous process of improvement which, in line with the corporate Code of Ethics, also involves sustainability and the environmental impact of its fleet”, stated Andrea Toccafondi, Koinè CEO. “The LNG project developed by the Sanpellegrino Group with Koinè once again highlights the importance of adopting a revolutionary approach to the issue of sustainability and the need to act together, on an ecosystem level, to accelerate the transition toward a sustainable transport system”, pointed out Franco Fenoglio, CEO and Managing Director of Italscania.
Cutting-edge vehicles
The vehicles in the LNG fleet are fitted with new, 13-litre Scania methane engines (with torque of 2000 Nm and 410 HP) with performance comparable to a diesel engine of the same power. In terms of sustainability, methane ensures up to a 15% reduction of CO2 with the use of fossil-origin methane, whereas with bio-methane, it can guarantee up to a 90% reduction.
